FAQ - Hoods

Most Elica hoods can be installed in 2 different modes: In duct-out mode the hood expels the air outside the home. In most cases it is the best way to install a hood as ensures the best performance with the highest air flow rate and the minimum noise. In FILTERING or re-circulating mode the air is passed through a special filter to remove the odours and then re-circulated into the kitchen area. This mode is where there is no possible or pratical way to install ducting to suitable outlet in an external wall. This includes situations when the ducting would be too long and/or have too many bends both of which reduce the air flow. Some hoods are supplied as DUCT-OUT or FILTERING/RE-CIRCULATING versions and cannot be converted to the other. Periodic maintenance and/or replacement of the charcoal filters (filtering version) is required according to the instructions provided in the manual."

Elica recommends installing the duct-out version of the hood because it ensures better performance, high flow rate and low noise levels. Only in cases where it is impossible to install ducting to expel to the outside due to logistical and space reasons (for example, where there is no suitable outlet in an external wall), then use the re-circulating version or install the hood in filtering mode.

Most Elica hoods can be converted from duct-out to filtering and vice versa. To correctly convert the hood, always check the instruction manual and purchase the necessary accessories. If you would like to find out if your hood can be converted, please write to us using the form in the Contact Us section indicating the 12NC of the hood in question or call us on 01252 351111.

The non-return valve is needed to prevent fumes and air from outside or foreign bodies getting into the motor. It may only be used in hoods installed in duct out mode.

The hood should be regularly cleaned both internally and externally with gentle, neutral detergents and then fully dried. The metallic mesh grease filter - similar to a grid – should be cleaned about once a month with by hand with gentle detergents or in a dishwasher at low temp and short cycle. The metal grease filter does not lose its properties even if it discolours when washed in a dishwasher.

Hoods installed in FILTERING mode remove unpleasant odours through a specific active carbon filter, recycling air back into the kitchen through the openings in the upper part. This type of product is suitable in situations without external outlets. In this version, it is essential to replace or regularly maintain the filter according to the instructions in the manual. For details regarding the type of filter and maintenance and replacement, please contact us. Make sure you indicate the 12NC of the product.

Internal hood cleaning must be done using soft cloths and neutral detergents. Before starting, disconnect the electricity supply and only reconnect it after having thoroughly dried all damp parts. Avoid contact with electrical wires or other functional product parts. Wear protective cut-proof gloves.

Not all the Elica hood models are sold with the wall hole drilling template included. If you want to know if a specific model has one or you want to request one, fill in the form in the Contact us section, providing the 12-digit code which starts with “208”, indicated on the rating plate inside the product or the PRF code which you can find in the catalogue or on the www.elica.com website in the product section.

For the best performance the outlet hole should not be reduced. If you have to reduce the the diameter of the outlet hole it should never be reduced more than 20% of the original diameter. Reducing it by more than 20% will significantly decrease the performance of the hood and increase the noise level. For example, if the outlet hole is 150 mm, the section can be reduced to 125 mm at the most. If the outlet hole is 125 mm, it can be reduced to 100 mm. In some models, it is not possible to reduce the diameter of the fumes outlet hole, so we recommend checking the indications in the manual which can be downloaded from the Elica website in the product data sheet of the relevant model.

Positioning the hood at a lower height above teh hob than indicated in the instruction manual of installation instructions will void the warranty and endanger the user’s safety. Moreover, if the installation instructions of the hob specify a greater distance, this should be used as the minimum.

The carbon filter cleans the contaminated air generated during cooking. The plant-based activated carbon captures unpleasant odours, particles and unwanted substances before reintroducing the filtered air into your kitchen. The filter has a specific life cycle. As time passes, the grease particles that accumulate start to restrict the flow of air and the contact the particles have with the charcoal so the filtering process becomes less efficient and the hood becomes noisier. Though most Elica filters can be regenerated, as explained in the instruction manual, the performance will gradually degrade. Replacing the carbon filter from time to time is therefore necessary. To find out more, please consult our guide on purchasing carbon filters at this link.

The hood must be cleaned with neutral products (pH7) that are neither alkaline nor acid. Check that there are no harmful components such as soda, ammonia, chlorine or acid in the cleaning product. If the hood is made of steel, it is important to be careful about the type of cleaning product you purchase as the presence of the above-mentioned substances may have a harmful effect on the steel, causing stains or rust spots. The hood must be regularly cleaned both internally and externally in strict accordance with the maintenance instructions. Failure to follow the rules for hood cleaning, as well as filter and accessory replacement and cleaning may result in a fire hazard.

To find out if your hood can be used with a remote control, fill in the form in the Contact us section. To find out the compatibility between products and accessories, it is essential to provide the hood’s 12NC code. This is a 12-digit number that starts with 208 and is found on the product’s rating plate. The compatibility is, however, also specified in the use and maintenance manual of all products.

To replace Elica lightbulbs we suggest checking the maintenance booklet in the section “lightbulb replacement,” if it is an action that you can do alone (in such a case always make sure to disconnect the electricity supply to the appliance beforehand), or if necessary, contact technical customer assistance for help.

Replacing activated charcoal filters is simple and can be done without assistance. You can find more information in the instruction manual, downloadable at elica.com, inside the relative product sheet in the “Download” section. Click here to purchase activated charcoal filters at our e-shop

Elica hoods have a variety of lighting. The product light specifications are found on the rating label. You can also find them very easily by checking the TECHNICAL FEATURES in the product specification on the Elica.com website.

If the hood is installed in re-circulating mode you can feel the air being expelled through the vents. If it is installed in duct-out mode simply diconnect the ducting and allow the air to flow out freely by turning the hood on and varying the speed. If the air is discharged, the hood is operating correctly.

If you have an electric or induction hob, it is normal for condensation to transform into droplets. This phenomenon does not normally occur in the case of gas hobs, as the gas heats both the pot and the surrounding air. As the hood also heats, the vapours rise and meet with a warm body, which causes them to evaporate. Induction hobs, on the other hand, heat the pot but not the surrounding air; therefore, when the vapours rise, they meet with a cold body, which transforms the vapours into droplets, which then fall onto the hob. Condensation is, however, a natural phenomenon. We advise you to turn the hood on 5-10 minutes before starting to cook and turn it off 10-15 minutes after you have finished.
